Be Strong, Get Fit!

Hello friends, curious ones, and those surfing the net,

It's been a while since I last wrote to you. My explanation is simple. Remember when you were in school and HAD to read books, then in your spare time reading books became a chore rather than pleasure? That exactly what blogging became for me. But guess what - IM BACK.

I've decided to take this blog in a new direction. I want to dedicate this space to share my fitness journey and have it be a space of motivation for you. By no means am I an expert, but I am someone who knows the struggle first hand and have found tools that have set me up for success.

For many many years I've struggled with getting fit. I've tried weight watchers, different crazy diets, I've joined gyms, and I've signed up for tons of different fitness classes. I've never found something that works for me, until now.

In December, when we started thinking of resolutions, my goal became clear. In May I would be in a Wedding party and I didn't want to be 'that bridesmaid'…...I wanted to be THAT Bridesmaid. You know what I mean. These pictures are so special to the couple and their family. We'll be looking back at these photos years from now and saying 'remember that amazing day?' I want to look back and say 'yes I do remember that amazing day' where I felt so good in my own skin to take these gorgeous photos. This was my 'Why' - for now.

In your own weight loss, health journey, or fitness plan, we all need a WHY. We need a 'why are we doing this' because it's going to be hard. It's not going to be easy, because if it were easy, everyone would do it.

From the very first season of Biggest Loser, I've always been a Jillian Michaels fangirl. The woman has my respect. She knows it's hard work but she also proves time and again it's SO WORTH IT. She hates working out just as much as the next person. She's real and her tough love motivation is exactly what I need. I committed myself to her 90 Day Body Revolution Challenge.

What is it? It's a 90 day extreme weight loss system Michaels designed that includes 15 DVDs and a Meal Plan. Simple enough. One 30min workout a day and counting calories making sure the formula reads: Breakfast 200, Lunch 400, Snack 200, and Dinner 400. You're gonna need two sets of weights (heavy and light) plus a resistance band. In a month and a half I've noticed huge changes.

  1. Toned arms - That was not one of my goals, but I cant wait to wear tank tops this summer.
  2. Strong legs - I've got the definition back in them from my dancing days.
  3. Weight loss - I don't have exact numbers because I've been house sitting and they don't have a scale -  (which might actually be a good thing) but I know it, I can feel, I can see it, and so can others. My grandfather said the other day I look different, for him to notice is huge! I've always been an XL in tights, I now need a Medium. THATS SO EXCITING.

The hardest part for me has been planning. The picture below speaks volumes. Anyone can workout. Anyone can workout hard. But the real effort is in your meal planning. The real effort is in planning ahead. The saying goes if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Plan one night a week to dedicate an hour to just writing out your meals for the week. Keep a journal, seriously! Then make sure you schedule in time to go grocery shopping and time to cook.

Stick with me and I'll share with you my tips and tricks for how to plan for success. It should be noted this is not a product review but rather a way to share what I've learned. I still fail from time to time but I get back up and I perservere. We are all students and this is just one more way can succeed together. My question for you; what is your most difficult challenge in fitness and have you found a way to over come it?

30 Day Challenge

For 30 days I will do hot yoga. I've been doing yoga for many years and I wanted to finally commit to it. Through Moksha Yoga Kildonan I'm deepening my practice. It's only day 6 and I've already seen improvement. I feel better, I have deeper sleeps, and I'm more flexible. At Moksha I track the days I'm there with cute little stickers beside my name on their board. I'm also playing yogi bingo at Moksha. Things like a 10min savasana or a taking a picture in my favourite pose gets me a square.

Through the studio I get to attend three workshops and a finale party. My first workshop is Tuesday, a Moksha flow class. Flow class might be the hardest because instead of holding poses your moving through them fluidly. It takes more control to be graceful. Flow classes really challenge me and help me grow in my practice.

Today I did two classes. My second class was a hot hatha class. It was nice to do such a relaxing practice after my regular class. The class is there to relieve stress and tension. It was so relaxing I fell asleep twice.  Hatha is not my favourite but I can see its benefits for other yogis.

My life is busy and I like it that way. Before starting the challenge I certainly had my doubts as to how I would fit my practice in daily. This is just another reason why it's a challenge. In my one week I've come to realize what it means to have an active lifestyle. To lead a healthy lifestyle you need to be active daily. Making that time is very important. Setting aside one hour a day to focus on myself both mentally and physically feels amazing. Sure I could use that extra hour a day for homework or making money but I've chosen to put myself first. I'm happy I didn't let my doubts get the better of me. Let the countdown begin!
